Discovery of the Amrohvi Naqvi Haplogroup!
By: Zain Raza
The South Asian Syed Y-DNA Project are happy to announce one of the most interesting results present in claiming descendants of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
"Shah Wilayat" Hussain Sharfuddin is a very famous figure in India who lived during the 1200s in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. According to oral and written histories, Shah Wilayat's father migrated from Wasit, Iraq to India, where they later moved to Amroha and settled down. Shah Wilayat claimed to be a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) through his cousin Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (as) and his 6x great grandson, Imam Ali al-Hadi al-Naqi (as). Descendants of Imam al-Naqi take the surname Naqvi.
Descendants of Shah Wilayat have been prominent in Amroha for the past 8 centuries, and nowadays, there are thousands of them living across the world. In 2015, one descendant of Shah Wilayat tested at FamilyTreeDNA with the Big Y-500, positive for haplogroup I-S10768, a descendant of I-M223. This is of course one of the most unique results found in Indian Sayyids, as they match closest to Southern Europeans, and one ancient Lebanese sample.
In 2023, a second descendant of Shah Wilayat tested with the Big Y-700, again positive for I-S10768. This morning, the discover page and TMRCA of the final result of these two cousins has been made available.
These two men share an ancestor 11 generations back, with their oral histories creating an estimate of 1450CE for when their common ancestor, Muntakhib Sani, a 9th generation descent of Shah Wilayat lived in Amroha.
We are proud to announce I-BY124401 as the current haplogroup of the Naqvi Sayyids of Amroha, India!
We hope to test more Sayyids from Amroha in the future, with two having kits already ordered. We also hope that Shah Wilayat can be added as a Notable Connection as well in the future.
